Breast reduction

Breast reduction, otherwise known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that reduces
the size of the breast. It removes excess skin, fat and tissues from the breast to achieve the right size
and or shape.
Despite the conventional wisdom that large breasts are sexy, this might not be the case for women
with extremely large breast. For them, their breasts are a great source of inconvenience.
First of all, finding the right bra size can be a nightmare since most bras are not made for our chesty
sisters. Overtime, as a result of wearing ill fitting bras, they develop chronic shoulder and neck pain
that requires medication.
Sweating around the breasts is a major concern for women with large breasts and is often times very
uncomfortable.
If you speak to women with large boobs, they will tell you that most times finding a perfectly fitting
dress may be a challenge. If they find a good dress, every other part of the body fits except for one,
the chest.
Large breasts greatly impair physical activity. This, coupled with the negative self image that some
women experience because of their breasts, can hurt self esteem and reduce the overall quality of
life.
It is important to note that reduction mammoplasty can also be of help to those who want their
bodies in a certain way without necessarily having problems with their breasts.
We will explore the various options of breast reduction
1. Anchor Incision pattern
This is regarded as the gold standard of reduction mammoplasty. A cut is made around the areola
and then continues down the centre of the lower half of the breasts. Another cut goes horizontally
along the breast crease forming an inverted ‘T’. This method allows the surgeon to control the shape
and proportion of the breast by removing tissue from any side. This is the most ideal method for
those with very large breasts.
2. Vertical incision
This is good for women with mild to moderately large breasts because it gives the surgeon less
control and therefore working on a large breast may be difficult. An incision is made around the
areola and extends down the lower half of the breast.
3. “Donut” or “Benelli” reduction
This involves making an incision around the areola. This gives little access to breast tissue and is not
good for women with very large breasts. The scar will hide under the dark areola skin.
4. Liposuction
Liposuction is good for mild breast reduction for women with fatty breast tissue and good skin
elasticity.
