Breast augmentation

Breast augmentation, otherwise known as augmentation mammoplasty or simply ‘boob job’ is a
surgical procedure that involves the use of breast implants or fat transfer to increase the size of the
breasts.
Breast augmentation is the most common plastic surgery for women in America. For some women,
breast augmentation is all about enhancing self esteem and improving self confidence while for
others it is part of rebuilding the breast for various conditions.
Why is breast augmentation done?
Breast augmentation may be of help to you in the following situations:
- If you want to enhance your appearance because of asymmetry of the breasts.
- To correct uneven breasts after breast surgery for other conditions.
- After reduction in the size of the breast during pregnancy
- To improve self confidence.
It is important to discuss your goals with your surgeon so that you have realistic expectations of
what breast augmentation can do for you.
Considerations
Before you consider breast augmentation, you may have to consider the following facts that you
have to discuss with your surgeon:
- Breast augmentation might interfere with breast feeding. Whereas some women breastfeed
well after boob job, some don’t do as well.
- Breast implants are not meant to last forever. The average time is about ten years.
- Breast implants may complicate mammography during routine breast screening. You will
therefore have to request for special views for better evaluation of the breasts.
- You may need additional surgery after you have removed your implants
- Breast implants don’t correct sagging breasts. You might need a breast lift to sort that out.
- Breast size, shape and contours may change with weight gain or weight loss.
Types of breast augmentation
breast augmentation can be done by either introduction of implants or fat transfer.
- Implants
This is a prosthesis used to change the size, shape or contour of the breast. There are three
types of breast implants defined by their filler material: saline solution, silicon gel and
composite filler. Composite fillers are no longer used because of associated health risks and
complications. Tissue expanders are used to form pockets that will be filled by implants in
future.
- Fat transfer
This is the most commonly used method. Fat cells are harvested from donor site of the body via
a liposuction. The donor areas of the body could be the thighs, abdomen, buttocks among
others. Collected fats contain stem cells.

The fat is cleaned and filtered to a sterile system. It is further processed by being separated
from the anaesthetic liquid used in liposuction. It is then condensed and readied for breast
augmentation procedure.
A qualified plastic surgeon then injects the fat in the breast to increase the breast size.
